Types Of Binoculars

Binoculars are used for seeing objects that are far off in the distance well beyond the scope of the human eye. They are like mini telescopes used for viewing the distance. Binoculars vary slightly from monocular telescopes. There are two viewing sites as well as the ability to capture 3 dimensional shapes. Binoculars are also much more equipped to show depth and are more comfortable as the user does not have to cover one eye for the best results.

Galilean binoculars are some of the oldest types. These were the first model and were discovered in the 17th century, soon after the discovery of telescopes. Some of the cheaper styles of binoculars in existence today still use the Galilean model. However, they are about as powerful as a good pair of opera glasses.

Porro-prism binoculars were next to follow. These added many conveniences to the Galen model. The length of the binoculars could be shortened with no loss of quality to the image. These were also much wider allowing for greater depth in the image.

Roof prism binoculars were next to be discovered. These were narrower and more compact than the porro-prism binoculars. The objective lenses are also online with the eye pieces making the quality of the image much better.

Today there are all shapes and sizes to binoculars. Some are for viewing objects in the not so far in the distance while others are far more powerful. Binoculars can make walks through the woods much more exciting. It allows the person to view nature up close without actually having to get close physically. Bird watching and other similar hobbies are given a whole new dimension with the help of a good pair of binoculars.

Binoculars today are available for the casual user or the professional. They type one chooses will largely depend on the purpose they intend. One can go with the inexpensive Galilean binoculars for casual observation or splash out on a good roof prism set. What ever is chosen, a whole new dimension will be added to your hobby of gazing.
